Gratefulness Brings Happiness

Gratefulness Brings Happiness

Dear Young People,

Recently, Bethany wrote a post about being so focused on the next step that she forgets to be grateful NOW. My sweet, young friends, I must be honest with you. This feeling is true in all stages of life. It never fully goes away. It’s something we’re all working on.

Regardless of age or station in life, we are all striving toward the “next” thing. Working for a promotion, saving for retirement, becoming debt free – admirable things. It’s part of setting goals and that’s okay. But it’s not okay when it robs you of joy in your everyday.

I recently read this quote and it made me think…

You can’t train yourself to be happy, but maybe you CAN train yourself to be grateful. Each day. In every little moment. Even in the tough times.

Don’t rush through life pushing so hard to get to the next step that you miss today. Each day is a gift you will never have again. So be purposeful.

So how can you learn to be grateful?

Bethany said it best. Keep a gratitude journal, tell someone your joys, slow down, find your strengths, and reduce your stress.

Be grateful for the struggles of your young married life – it makes you stronger as a couple. Be grateful for living small financially – it makes you wise. Be grateful for the dirty clothes – at least you have them. And be grateful for the crying babies – it won’t be long before they’re gone.

Take a moment and take a breath. Don’t compare. You are living the life God has for you so REALLY look around and see how blessed you are. Right now in this very moment.

Love,
