Review: What Happens When Women Walk in Faith

As I sit down to write this book review, I just finished a devotional based around Acts 26:19, “So you see, King Agrippa, I have not been disobedient to what was revealed to me from heaven.” How fitting? This book, What Happens When Women Walk In Faith: Trusting God Takes You to Amazing Places, is all about pursuing those God-given dreams in your heart and the journey that will take you on. But, that’s the thing—it’s talking about GOD GIVEN dreams, not just any ole’ “I wanna be a millionaire dream”. It’s pursuing these individualized God-given ministries for our lives that will allow us to say “I have not been disobedient to what was revealed to me from heaven” at the end of each day.

My Score and Honest Review

Here’s the scoop: I love the book! 10/10 from me. I love Lysa TerKeurst’s way with words and the vulnerability in her writing. I follow her on social media so when I read stories about her family I’m able to put faces with names and feel like I’m talking with a friend. She never feels condescending or preachy, but like she truly has a desire for those reading her books to grow. I just love it!

About The Book

This book is set up into 5 phases that this God journey may take you through (Leaving, Famine, Believing, Death, Resurrection) with 20 bite-sized chapters. Each chapter concludes with a guided personal bible study, so this could be used as a devotional or even group bible study guide.

Essentially, Lysa is writing this book while recapping her journey to Proverbs 31 Ministries. It’s easy to look at people who seem like they’ve “made it” and play the comparison game, so she quickly breaks down that wall of thought and poses the question “What if the next big step God wants you to take is actually small?” Ouch. The God-sized dream in my heart probably begins by FULLY trusting Him with it and letting. Stinking. Go. It is His after all. She poses that walking out this dream begins by living each and every day in obedience… The little moments of trust are where we learn to trust in the big moments.

“God is good. He is way more interested in developing our characters to match our calling than manipulating our circumstances to make us happy.” (pg.149)

Then, in the sections of Famine and Death, she helps the reader grasp how everything not going according to our plan, is probably exactly how it is going according to God’s. It concludes with the Resurrection section: “In a way only He could, God makes your dream come true. Only then do you understand that real joy isn’t in the dream itself but rather in the richer faith you acquired along the way.” Again, ouch.

I scrolled through some Amazon reviews before I bought this book, and it doesn’t look like I’m alone in saying this: If you’ve ever struggled to know your purpose, struggled to step out in faith, or struggled while in the valley, this book is for you. This is a must-read. I can’t say enough good things!

Lord, reveal to us YOUR ministry for OUR lives. Help us to practice the walk of the feet in the light of your vision and trust you each step of the way. Strengthen our faith and trust in you and grant us the boldness to step out in that faith. Thank you for loving us, Lord.
